Away From HomeRachel Shatil

Opening reception will be held on Sunday, May 15 2016, from 4:00PM to 7:00PM.

Second reception, with artist talk, will be held on Sunday, May 29, 4pm - 7pm.

Poignant, whimsical, and theatrical, Rachel Shatil’s mixed-media sculpture, crafted from a variety of found objects and other materials, speak to memory, loss, and the tenuous nature of materiality: A discarded chair entirely covered in twigs, a disembodied coat poised as if fleeing, a gravity-defying long blond braid—each of Shatil’s pieces evokes a complex and affecting.

Born in Israel’s Yehaim Kibbutz, many of whose members—including Rachel’s parents—were Holocaust survivors, Rachel Shatil studied theater directing at Tel Aviv University and has directed over 25 plays and musicals. In the early 90's she founded a theater for youth, and later, developed her own acting studio. In the early 2000's, her theater company, The Portal Theater, operated in Davis Square Theater, Somerville, MA.

A resident of Boston since 1995, Shatil has turned her creative attentions to the visual arts since 2003.

RACHEL SHATIL SOLO SHOW is The Gallery @ Spencer Lofts’ third show of 2016. The Gallery

is a unique exhibition space within Chelsea’s Spencer Lofts condominium complex.

Reception and admission to the Gallery are free and open to the public. The RACHEL SHATIL
